Tiny Beautiful Things

Based on the bestselling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, Tiny Beautiful Things personifies many of the emotionally charged questions and answers that advice columnist “Dear Sugar” published online from 2010 through 2012. When the struggling writer was asked to take over the unpaid, anonymous columnist position, Strayed used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small.

Tiny Beautiful Things is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions that have no answers.

Tiny Beautiful Things at Authenticity Theater is directed by Kelley Jordan. The cast features Catherine Erhardt as Sugar, the author whose life is changed by her interactions with so many strangers. The assortment of letter writers is portrayed by Maurice Winsell, Sasha Keefer, Elizabeth Coats, Lamont Roux, Neuma Joy, and John Buisman. who weave in and out of the story and Sugar's home as they share their stories.  Running time appx. 1 hour, 20 minutes.  Seating is modified "in the round" for an immersive experience with the characters and story.

Content Warning: This play contains adult language and subject matter intended for mature audiences, including discussions of sexual assault, child abuse, and death/suicide. Viewer discretion is advised.

“Catharsis, that ancient communal ritual of purging and healing…a show that aims to open our eyes to the tiny moments when the world surprises us with care.” – New York Magazine

Artemisia

Artemisia

Artemisia Gentileschi was the most celebrated female painter of the 17th century, yet her name was all but lost for centuries. Attacked at just seventeen, publicly shamed and tortured to prove her truth, Gentileschi nevertheless fought for her art and the freedom to make it on her own terms. Always contending with her father, consumed with passion for her lover, and ferociously devoted to her children, Artemisia is a modern woman before her time. Artemisia is a work of humor and warmth that celebrates the courage, artistry, and humanity of a woman who attacked the glass ceiling with every brush stroke. (www.laurengunderson.com)

Funny, touching, and written with rare grace and sensitivity, this play is a moving examination of the progress of a generation, from the socially and politically activist sixties to the success-oriented eighties—a time during which the status of American women underwent profound, and sometimes unsettling, change. The play follows Heidi Holland from the ages of 16 to 40 as she explores her desires for her own life, inspired by the liberation of feminism, but tempered by gendered expectations in a patriarchal society.

*The opening on Friday night will include a brief discussion with women's studies scholars after the show.
